Old Bengali cinema poster for sale: Abhoyer Biye (1957).
Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bengali movie poster of the 1957 drama directed by Sukumar Dasgupta that starred the most popular and successful film star of Bengal, Uttam Kumar in the lead role opposite Sabitri Chatterjee.
Presented by Chandimata Films, Abhoyer Biye (1957) also starred Shobha Sen, Aparna Devi, Bikash Roy, Chabbi Biswas & Jahar Ganguly in supporting roles.
The film told the story of a simpleton called Abhoy (Uttam Kumar) who gets engaged to a smart and sophisticated rich girl called Sabitri (Sabitri Chatterjee). When he arrives at her house dressed in a traditional dhoti and kurta, she makes fun of him. Ashamed, Abhoy leaves. He later decides to shave off his beard and mustache completely for a fresh new look. This time around, dressed in a tuxedo and wearing a hat, Abhoy arrives at Sabitri’s mansion looking smart and sophisticated. A comedy of errors follow.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1960s), this old Bengali cinema poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Abhoyer Biye movie poster was originally hand painted on canvas by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.
Superstar Uttam Kumar is captured in a brilliantly composed hand drawn portrait in this old Bengali cinema poster. Lighting on his face and highlights on his hair make the artwork stand out in stark contrast against an ocean blue background. The eyes of the actor are seen painted in the same shade of blue, giving an overall consistency to the palette.
Typography used in this old Uttam Kumar poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a very creatively designed stylized font. A butterfly is seen perched on top of the film’s title.
The soundtrack album of Abhoyer Biye (1957) was composed by Rabin Chatterjee.
