Featured here is an original vintage movie poster of the classic 1978 animated fantasy drama directed by Ralph Bakshi that featured Christopher Guard as Frodo and William Squire as Gandalf.

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, The Lord of the Rings, the screenplay was adapted from both volumes, i.e. The Fellowship of the Ring as well as The Two Towers. It told the story of how Hobbits, men, an elf, a dwarf and a wizard united in their mission to destroy the evil Dark Lord’s magical ring.

The Lord of the Rings (1978) also starred Michael Scholes, John Hurt, Simon Chandler, Dominic Guard, Michael Graham Cox, Anthony Daniels and David Buck in supporting roles. It is a brilliant example of how traditional cel animation was combined with live shots (using rotoscoping – a technique in which scenes are first shot live and then traced onto animation cels).

The film has amassed a cult following over the years, making this Lord of the Rings movie poster, highly collectible!

Printed and circulated in India during the local release run of the film (somewhere in the 1980s), this Lord of the Rings 1978 poster was originally intended for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

Typography used in this vintage movie poster is entirely in English, with the title appearing in red in a handwritten typeface at the top. An announcement on the top reads, “Fantasy Beyond Your Imagination,” giving away the plot of the film.
