Illustrated movie poster for sale: Jaise Ko Taisa (1973).

Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bollywood poster of the old 1973 Hindi film directed by Murugan Kumaran that starred Jeetendra in a double role opposite Reena Roy and Srividya (debut).

Produced by M. Saravanan and M. Balasubramanian under the AVM Productions banner and presented by AVM Studios, Jaise Ko Taisa (1973) also starred Anwar Hussain, Ramesh Deo, Roja Ramani, Kamini Kaushal, Mohan Choti, Dinesh Hingoo and Poornam Viswanathan in supporting roles.

A remake of the hit Kannada film Bhale Jodi (1970), the plot of Jaise Ko Taisa (1973) was similar to cult double role Bollywood films such as Ram Aur Shyam (1967) and Seeta Aur Geeta (1972). Several successful films based on a similar plot followed, most notable among them being ChaalBaaz (1989) and Kishen Kanhaiya (1990).

Jaise Ko Taisa (1973) told the story of identical twins Vijay and Vinod separated at birth (both played by Jeetendra). Vinod is the son of a late wealthy landlord who has been raised by his evil uncle Mamaji (Anwar Hussain), who along with his son Pashi (Ramesh Deo) tortures him mentally and physically on a daily basis. The abuse also involves drugging Vinod to get him to sign property papers and give up a diary that holds the secret location of his family’s priceless heirloom which the two want to usurp. Raised in a toxic environment of abuse, Vinod grows up to be weak, anxious and unable to stand up for himself. Vijay on the other hand has been raised in a hard environment of abject poverty by his loving mother (Kamini Kaushal). He is strong, confident and brave. One day, Vijay learns that his mother has early stage intestinal cancer and three thousand rupees are required for an immediate life saving surgery. Unable to procure the funds, he makes a desperate attempt to steal the money from a mansion where he meets his identical twin Vinod for the first time. The two forge a friendship and Vinod offers Vijay the money for his mother’s operation. In return, upon learning Vinod’s plight, Vijay offers to trade places with him and set the evil father son duo who has been tormenting him for years straight.

Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film (somewhere in the 1970s), this Jaise Ko Taisa poster was designed and printed for publicity of the film in Kolkata theaters but never ended up being used.

This vintage illustrated movie poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a poster art studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.

Lead actor Jeetendra is seen in a pop art styled portrait prominently on the right. He is depicted holding a whip in his hand. Actress Reena Roy is depicted in a smiling pose, captured in her character of a village girl on the left. The entire poster is hand painted in a stunning two tone combination of orange and purple, giving it a very unique look.

A scene taken from the title song, “Jaise Ko Taisa Mila” sung by Kishore Kumar is depicted in line drawing format on the bottom left of this illustrated movie poster in which Jeetendra is seen whipping Ramesh Deo.

Typography used in this Jaise Ko Taisa movie poster is primarily in English, with only the title translated to Devanagari Hindi. The main English title appears illustrated in white, highlighted with an orange border.

The soundtrack album of Jaise Ko Taisa (1973) was composed by music maestro R.D. Burman, while lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. It featured popular duets such as, “Ab Ke Sawan Mein Jee Dare” sung by Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar and “Kaun Si Hai Woh Cheez Jo Yahan Nahin Milti” sung by Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar. “Chalte Chalte Peechhe Mud Ke” sung by Kishore Kumar was another memorable track from the album.
