Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the 1981 super hit Hindi film produced and directed by Manmohan Desai that starred the greatest superstar of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan opposite the Dreamgirl of Bollywood, Hema Malini in lead roles. Rishi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy also starred in key roles in Naseeb (1981).
The film’s stellar star cast also included Pran, Amjad Khan, Kader Khan, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, Shakti Kapoor, Kim Yashpal, Uma Khosla, Shammi, Lalita Pawar, Jagdish Raj, Om Shivpuri, Mukri, Shubha Khote, Jeevan, Viju Khote, Manik Irani, Asrani, Sunder, Bhagwan Dada, Keshto Mukherjee and Satyen Kappu in supporting roles.
Naseeb (1981) also featured a special appearance from some of Indian cinema’s biggest stars such as Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Rakesh Roshan, Randhir Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, Bindu and Simmi Garewal in the timeless song, “John Johnny Janardan.”
The complex plot of Naseeb (1981) begins with four friends, Namdeo (Pran) Damu (Amjad Khan), Raghu (Kader Khan) and Jaggi (Jagdish Raj), who split the cost of a lottery ticket four ways. They play highest card wins in order to decide who gets custody of the lottery ticket before the results are declared. Jaggi wins the game and the lottery ticket is entrusted to him for safekeeping. When results are announced in the newspaper, Jaggi is ecstatic to learn they have together won a sum of half a million rupees. However, greed takes over Damu and Raghu, who stab Jaggi to death and steal the lottery ticket, implicating Namdeo for the crime. The two render Namdeo unconscious and throw him off a bridge, presuming him dead. Damu and Raghu decide to invest the half million lottery prize into a hotel together and employ Namdeo’s son Johnny aka John Jani Janardan (Amitabh Bachchan) as bartender when he grows up. Damu’s son Vicky (Shatrughan Sinha), Johnny’s best friend, is sent abroad to pursue his higher education. The two best friends end up falling for the same girl, Miss Asha (Hema Malini) who is a singer. The story takes a turn when it is revealed that Namdeo is still alive and is seeking revenge for his friend Jaggi’s murder.
Released under the joint banner of MKD Films and Aasia Corporation, Naseeb (1981) was a runaway success at the box office, making this poster highly collectible!
Printed and circulated subsequent to the first release of the film (somewhere in the mid 1980s), this old Amitabh movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Naseeb poster features striking hand drawn artwork along with pasted photographic stills. Originally designed by the highest paid Bollywood poster painter of all time, Diwakar Karkare, this old Amitabh poster features a combination of both hand painted as well as photographic artwork.
The poster features a still photograph of Hema Malini riding a motorcycle on the top. Rishi Kapoor appears running alongside. Hand painted faces of superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha are seen at the bottom. Bollywood poster artist Diwakar’s printed signature is seen on the bottom left of this original old Naseeb poster.
The soundtrack album of Naseeb (1981) was composed by hit duo Laxmikant Pyarelal and was a blockbuster hit. Songs from the film, such as “John Johnny Janardan” sung by Mohammed Rafi and “Mere Naseeb Mein” sung by Lata Mangeshkar are played till today.
The film’s success spawned two regional remakes, Sandhippu (1983) in Tamil and Trimurtulu (1987) in Telugu respectively.
