Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bengali cinema poster of the 1956 drama directed by Sushil Majumdar that starred Bengal cinema’s leading actress Suchitra Sen along with Basanta Chowdhury in lead roles.
Made in black and white, Subharatri (1956) also starred Sabita Chattopadhyay, Bhanu Bannerjee, Chhabi Biswas and Nripati Chatterjee in supporting roles.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1960s), this old Bengali cinema poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Subharatri poster was originally designed in mixed media format by a poster design studio in Kolkata using both hand painted oil on canvas as well as photographic collage techniques.
Superstar Suchitra Sen is captured in a striking still photograph at the center. She appears smiling and the still does full justice to her stunning beauty. Highlights on her hair make the photograph stand out in stark contrast against a deep orange red background. Actor Basanta Chowdhury is seen illustrated on the left, holding a paintbrush and a palette in his hands. A black and white still photograph of Chhabi Biswas is seen on the right of this Subharatri poster.
Typography used in this old Suchitra Sen poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a 3D font in yellow and orange.
The soundtrack album of Subharatri (1956) was composed by Gopen Mullick.
