Old Bengali cinema posters for sale: Sabyasachi (1977).
Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bengali movie poster of the 1977 action drama directed by Pijush Basu that starred the most popular and successful film star of Bengal, Uttam Kumar in the titular role of revolutionary freedom fighter Dr. Sabyasachi Mallick.
Produced by Asim Sarkar and released under the banner of Usha Films, Sabyasachi (1977) also starred Bikash Roy, Supriya Devi, Jayashree Kabir and Anil Chatterjee in supporting roles.
Based on a novel called Pather Dabi written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Sabyasachi (1977) told the story of a revolutionary freedom fighter called Dr. Sabyasachi Mallick (Uttam Kumar) who founds a secret society called Pather Dabi to free India from British rule. Sabyasachi is a master of disguises and manages to evade police each and every time. Inspector Nimai Roy (Bikash Roy) is given the impossible task of hunting Sabyasachi down.
Printed and circulated during the initial release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the late 1970s), this old Bengali cinema poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Sabyasachi poster was originally hand painted on canvas by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.
Superstar Uttam Kumar is captured in a brilliantly composed hand drawn portrait in this old Bengali cinema poster. He is illustrated holding a pistol in each hand, true to the meaning of his character’s name. Burning flames are seen composed in the background, which tie in with the foreground artwork brilliantly. The flames are seen lighting up one side of the actor’s face.
Set against a black background, the artwork creates a very high visual impact, standing out in stark contrast. Typography used in this old Uttam Kumar poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a very creatively designed stylized font in red.
The soundtrack album of Sabyasachi (1977) was composed by Uttam Kumar himself along with his music teacher Nidan Bandhu Banerjee.
