Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the old 2000 historical Hindi epic written, produced and directed by Kamal Haasan starring him in the lead role along with the “King of Bollywood” Shah Rukh Khan.
Simultaneously shot in Tamil as well as Hindi, Hey Ram (2000) also starred Hema Malini, Rani Mukerji, Vasundhara Das, Shruti Haasan, Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, Vikram Gokhale, Saurabh Shukla, Nassar, Manoj Pahwa and Tushar Gandhi (Great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi) in supporting roles.
An alternate history film, Hey Ram (2000) fictionalized the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse in it’s narrative. Saketh exacts his revenge on the Muslim tailor who raped and murdered his wife, Altaf (Shadaab Khan). Blinded by hatred, he now begins to hold Mahatma Gandhi responsible for the the partition of India and the violence between Hindus and Muslims. Saketh sets out to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi where he runs into his archaeologist friend Amjad Ali Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), a Muslim. Before being killed by a Hindu mob, Amjad tries to convince his friend Saketh Ram to let go of his hatred and his plan to assassinate the Father of the Nation.
Upon it’s release, Hey Ram (2000) received widespread critical acclaim and bagged three National Film Awards. It was India’s official submission to the Oscars for the year 2000, but it was not nominated.
Printed and circulated during the first release of the film (somewhere in 2000), this Shah Rukh Khan poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
Superstars Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan are seen in large symmetrical close ups flanking either side of this Hey Ram poster. Actress Rani Mukerji is seen in a smaller close up at the center, with her still covered by a sky background that resembles India’s tricolor flag.
Typography used in this Shah Rukh Khan movie poster is primarily in English, with only the title translated to Devanagari Hindi at the bottom. The title of the film appears woven into a bow and arrow, symbolizing Lord Ram’s strength and righteousness.
The soundtrack album of Hey Ram (2000) was composed by noted music composer of south Indian cinema, Ilaiyaraaja.
