Bollywood street art poster for sale: Patthar Aur Payal (1974).
Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bollywood poster of the 1974 Hindi action drama directed by Harmesh Malhotra that starred Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Vinod Khanna and Ajit in key roles.
Produced by K.P. Singh & N.P. Singh and released under the K.P.S. Films banner, Patthar Aur Payal (1974) also starred Rajendranath, Jayshree T., Iftekhar, Sapru, M.B. Shetty, Ram Mohan and Rajan Haksar in supporting roles.
Patthar Aur Payal (1974) told the story of brothers Ajit Singh aka Bade Thakur (Ajit) and Ranjit Singh aka Chhote Thakur (Dharmendra), who take to banditry after their father is wrongly implicated and hanged on the basis of false witness testimony. The two brothers form an organized gang of bandits, becoming their leaders. The police, led by DIG Verma (Iftekhar) try to catch or eliminate the bandits who have become notorious in the area. When the bandits raid a village fair, their lieutenant (Sarju) Vinod Khanna tries to rape Aasha (Hema Malini) but Chhote intervenes, saving her modesty. The incident sets Sarju against Chhote, leading to dissent within the ranks of their gang. The gang then tries to kidnap Aasha for ransom, as she is the daughter of millionaire Rai Bahadur (D.K. Sapru). However, Chhote intervenes again and escapes with Aasha to Bombay. He reunites Aasha with her father and decides to head back to the village. However, Aasha has fallen in love with Chhote and wants him to reform his life forever and give up banditry. In the meantime, DIG Verma receives word that Chhote is in Bombay and pursues him. On the other hand, Sarju instigates Bade Thakur against his younger brother and demands that they kill him for treason. Now Ranjit Singh is wanted not just by the police but by his own gang. Will Aasha and Ranjit’s love be fulfilled?
Printed and circulated during the release of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1970s), this vintage Bollywood poster was designed for publicity but never ended up being used.
This Bollywood street art poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a Bombay based art studio and features striking artwork.
Superstar Dharmendra is seen illustrated in a large close up portrait in the background. He is depicted in his character of a bandit, sporting a handlebar mustache and earrings. Vinod Khanna is seen in a smaller hand drawn portrait below in green, appearing in his character of a bandit as well, holding a rifle in his hand. Actress Hema Malini is seen in a dancing pose in a quirky portrait on the left of this Bollywood street art poster.
The entire poster has been designed using only two colors: Green and orange. All three portraits have been hand drawn using line art style, giving them a very quirky appearance. Typography used in this Dharmendra movie poster is entirely in Devanagari Hindi, except for a translation of the title into English. The main Hindi title appears in a stunning 3D styled font on the top in green.
The soundtrack album of Patthar Aur Payal (1974) was composed by hit music composer duo Kalyanji-Anandji. It featured popular songs such as, “Na Mila Tu Nazar” sung by Asha Bhosle and “Tohe Lene Aayi Main Aayi Sanwariya” & “Aiso Paapi Saawan Aayo” sung by nightingale Lata Mangeshkar.
