Produced by Dev Anand under the Navketan Films banner co-owned by the two Anand brothers, Guide (1965) was an adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel, “The Guide” written by R. K. Narayan. The film told the story of a freelance tour guide called Raju (Dev Anand) who falls in love with Rosie (Waheeda Rehman), the daughter of a courtesan married to an old wealthy archaeologist called Marco (Kishore Sahu).
Guide (1965) is the first film in the history of Indian cinema to sweep the Filmfare Awards by wining all major award categories (Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress). It is widely considered to be one of the finest masterpieces of Indian cinema and a cult classic, making this Guide film poster, highly collectible!.
Printed and circulated during the initial release run of the film (somewhere in the late 1960s), this vintage Bollywood poster was printed for publicity of the film in theaters but never ended up being used.
This Dev Anand poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format and features striking artwork.
In this minimalist poster, Dev Anand appears with a blanket wrapped around his torso. The iconic image is illustrated in hand drawn sketch style. The entire poster is designed using only a single color (yellow), which gives it a stunning appearance. The artwork appears encased inside a black frame border, which stands out against the minimal blank background.
Typography used in this Guide film poster is primarily in English, with only it’s title translated to both Devanagari Hindi as well as Urdu.
Guide was initially planned to be an Indo-American co-production – to be shot simultaneously in Hindi and English. The lead actress Waheeda Rehman was reportedly even tutored on her diction of English in preparation for the same.
The soundtrack album of Guide (1965) was composed by ace music composer Sachin Dev Burman. Songs of the film went on to become the biggest blockbusters of the decade and find place among the greatest soundtracks ever made in Indian cinema till today.
“Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai” and “Piya Tose Naina Laage Re” sung by Lata Mangeshkar went on to become a rage throughout the nation. “Gaata Rahe Mera Dil” sung by Kishore Kumar is a timeless classic and continues to be played till today.
A shortened 120-minute US version of the film was screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, 42 years after the original release of Guide.
