Featured here is a rare vintage original Bollywood poster of the social drama Hindi film produced and directed by Shakti Samanta that starred Sunil Dutt in the lead role opposite the “Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood,” Madhubala.

Released under the Shakti Films banner, Insaan Jaag Utha (1959) also starred Nazir Hussain, Madan Puri and Minoo Mumtaz in supporting roles.

The film was shot primarily at the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, which is located between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The story of Insaan Jaag Utha (1959) revolves around the construction of the dam. Gauri (Madhubala) is a local laborer who works at the dam site. Ranjeet (Sunil Dutt) arrives from Bombay and also finds work at the dam site, starting as a laborer and is subsequently promoted to crane operator. Gauri and Ranjeet fall in love. Unknown to Gauri, Ranjeet has actually come to the village to retrieve smuggled gold that he buried in her front yard before being caught and imprisoned for five years.

Madhubala’s role as simple village girl “Gauri” in Insan Jaag Utha is counted as one of her most memorable performances, making this vintage Bollywood poster, highly collectible!

Printed and circulated during the screening of the film in theaters (somewhere in the the 1960s), this Insaan Jaag Utha poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This rare Bollywood poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a movie poster design studio and features striking artwork.

Hand drawn close up side profiles of the lead couple, Sunil Dutt and Madhubala, are seen on the bottom half. The top half illustrates the construction work being carried out in the dam project.

Typography used in this Insaan Jaag Utha poster is primarily in English with a translation of the title appearing in both Devanagari Hindi as well as Urdu on the top. The main English title of the film is seen written in a stylized type in red with a white border.

The soundtrack album of Insan Jaag Utha was composed by legendary Bollywood music composer S. D. Burman, while songs were sung by Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. One of the songs from the film, “Jaanu Jaanu Ri,” sung by Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt, became immensely popular at the time of the film’s release.
