Featured here is a rare vintage original Bollywood poster of the social Hindi film, Insan Jaag Utha (1959).
Directed by Shakti Samanta, the film starred Sunil Dutt in the lead role opposite the most beautiful actress in Indian cinema of all time, the “Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood,” Madhubala.
Nazir Hussain, Madan Puri and Minoo Mumtaz played supporting roles in the film. Insan Jaag Utha was primarily shot on location at the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The story of the film revolves around the construction of the dam.
Madhubala’s role as simple village girl “Gauri” in Insan Jaag Utha is counted as one of her most memorable performances, making this vintage Bollywood poster, highly collectible!
Printed and circulated during the screening of the film in theaters (somewhere in the the 1960s), this vintage Bollywood poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
The artwork of this Madhubala poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a movie poster design studio. Sunil Dutt is seen in a quirky illustrated avatar in his character of a crane operator, wearing a construction hard hat. A stunning large close up of actress Madhubala wearing traditional Indian jewelry is seen alongside.
Typography used in this Madhubala poster for sale is completely in Devanagari Hindi with a translation of the title appearing in Urdu at the bottom right. The title of the film is seen written in a superbly illustrated 3D like font in yellow at the bottom of this Bollywood poster.
The soundtrack album of Insan Jaag Utha was composed by legendary Bollywood music composer S. D. Burman, while songs were sung by Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. One of the songs from the film, “Jaanu Jaanu Ri,” sung by Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt, became immensely popular at the time of the film’s release.
