Bangla poster design: Maya Mriga (1960).
Featured here is an actual surviving old Bengali film poster of the 1960 drama directed by Chitta Bose that starred the most popular and successful film star of Bengal, Uttam Kumar along with Biswajit Chatterjee.
Released under the banner of MKG Private Production Limited, Maya Mriga (1960) was based on a play of the same name written by Nihar Ranjan Gupta. This old Bengali drama also starred Sunanda Banerjee, Sandhya Rani and comedian Tulsi Chakraborty in supporting roles.
Printed and circulated during the release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1960s), this old Bangla movie poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Maya Mriga poster was originally hand painted on canvas by a Bangla poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.
A two color combination has been used in this old Bangla movie poster design. It features a striking mix of red and black, giving it a very catchy appearance. A large illustrated close up of actor Biswajit Chatterjee is seen on the left of this Maya Mriga poster.
Smaller hand drawn close up portraits of superstar Uttam Kumar, Sunanda Banerjee and Sandhya Rani are seen on the right. All five portraits are done using a two color tone combination and are set against a red background. Overall, the style of artwork gives a vintage pencil art feel to this old Bangla poster.
Typography used in this old Uttam Kumar movie poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a solid white 3D font encased in black at the top, contrasting against the red background.
The soundtrack album of Maya Mriga (1960) was composed by Manabendra Mukherjee, while lyrics were written by Shyamal Gupta. It featured the memorable Bengali song, “O Bak Bak Bak Bakam Bakam” sung by Sandhya Mukherjee.
Maya Mriga (1960) was remade in Hindi as Laadla (1966) starring Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy. It was also remade in Tamil as Annai (1962) and in Malayalam as Amma (1976).
