Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the old 1982 Hindi film written, produced and directed by Din Dayal Sharma that starred Sarika, Deepak Parashar and Suresh Oberoi in key roles.
Presented by K.B.Sharma under the Paramhans Chitra banner, Patthar Ki Lakeer (1982) also starred Shashi Puri, Bindu, Ashok Kumar, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Jayshree Talpade, Sunil Dhawan, Madan Puri, Asrani and I.S. Johar in supporting roles.
Patthar Ki Lakeer (1982) told the story of a married woman called Madhu (Sarika) who stands trial for murder. Madhu was raised by her wealthy father Daulatram Gupta (Madan Puri) and stepmother Kamini Devi (Bindu) who loves dancing. Unlike Gupta who is a cut throat businessman with no ethics, his business partner Verma (Ashok Kumar) has a heart of gold and is a philanthropist. Verma’s son Satish (Suresh Oberoi) on the other hand is completely the opposite and has taken after Madhu’s father. Satish is a womanizing alcoholic who wants to get married to Madhu so that he can usurp all her father’s wealth. Kamini Devi’s friend Sarita Devi’s son Prakash (Deepak Parashar) comes to Bombay to study business management and is staying at a lodge. Kamini Devi insists that Prakash moves into their mansion and he agrees. As time goes by, Prakash and Madhu begin to fall in love. Their opposing personalities bring them together. Neglected by her parents, Madhu is a carefree girl who has grown up living a life of excess, partying and staying out till late on most nights. Prakash however is grounded and mature. Prakash stands first in his college and is employed by Gupta in his company. Madhu gets married to Prakash and gives birth to a son called Rinku and a daughter called Chinky. Satish begins to plot and scheme against Prakash to oust him from the company as he fears Prakash will discover his misappropriation of funds. However, Prakash collects all the evidence from the company’s accountant and exposes Satish’s fraudulent dealings in front of his father Verma and his father’s business partner Gupta. Enraged, Verma slaps his son Satish and casts him out of the company, disowning him. Satish is furious and vows to destroy Prakash and Madhu’s happily married life. Satish gets a hold of Madhu’s college photos in which she is seen partying and romancing another man, Rajan (Shashi Puri). A lowlife conman, Rajan traps rich college girls by clicking photographs with them and then blackmailing and coercing them into having sex with him. Satish leaks the scandalous photos to the media and it becomes a front page sensation. Soon, everyone in society is talking about the adulterous double life of a millionaire’s daughter, Madhu. To make matters worse for the couple, Satish gets hand painted posters and banners made from the scandalous photos featuring Rajan and Madhu, displaying them outside movie theaters. After being humiliated by Satish in public, Prakash is enraged and beats him up. As a result Prakash is arrested and locked up. Verma bails him out. The scandal caused by Madhu’s photos being published destroys her life. Her father Daulatram Gupta commits suicide and her kids are expelled from school. Prakash begins to hate Madhu and gets distant. However, just when Prakash and Madhu are about to forget the episode and move forward with their married life, Satish bribes Rajan and sends him to blackmail Madhu once again. Madhu decides to solve the problem once and for all and shoots Rajan, killing him. Although Madhu is jailed for five years, she is exonerated by her family as well as society that learns her bitter truth.
Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1982), this Patthar Ki Lakeer poster was designed and printed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This amazing movie poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by Bollywood’s greatest and highest-paid movie poster artist, Diwakar Karkare of Studio Diwakar fame. His printed signature is seen on the bottom left of this poster.
Typical of Bollywood poster painter Diwakar’s brilliant command over the paintbrush, this vintage Bollywood poster features stunning hand painted artwork. Actress Sarika is seen wearing a bikini in a sensuous and stunning illustration prominently in this Patthar Ki Lakeer poster. The artwork is taken from the song, “Hum Woh Badal Hain.” A large hand painted portrait of actor Deepak Parashar’s face looms in the background. Master Bollywood poster artist Diwakar captures the intensity in his eyes to perfection.
An over painted still photograph of villain Suresh Oberoi smoking a cigarette is seen on the left. The entire background is left a minimal white, with just a few hand painted stars on the top, making the portraits in the foreground stand out in stark contrast.
Typography used in this amazing movie poster design is entirely in English. True to the meaning of the words, the title appears carved in stone in a shade of pink against a black background.
The soundtrack album of Patthar Ki Lakeer (1982) was composed by Usha Khanna, while lyrics were written by Anjaan. It featured the popular song, “Hum Woh Badal Hain” sung by Asha Bhosle.
