Bengali cinema posters for sale: Priyatama (1980).
Featured here is an actual surviving old Bengali film poster of the 1980 drama directed by Dinen Gupta that featured Sonali Gupta and Kaushik Banerjee in key roles.
Produced by Prakash Productions, Priyatama (1980) also starred Bikash Roy, Mahua Roychowdhury, Sumitra Mukherjee, Bhanu Banerjee and Robi Ghosh in supporting roles.
Based on a classic Bengali story called Bou Churi (Bride Stealing) written by Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Priyatama (1980) told the story of a young man from Kolkata who is deeply influenced by the teachings of a 19th century reform movement called Brahmo Samaj. Such is the impact on his mind that he initially rejects marriage. However, his outlook gradually shifts as he begins to experience life and realizes the importance of marriage and the love he has for his wife.
Printed and circulated during the first release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1980), this old Bengali cinema poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Priyatama poster was originally designed in mixed media format, combining the use of both photographic collage techniques as well as hand painted art style by a Bangla poster art studio in Kolkata called Beekecee.
A stunning arrangement of both black and white as well as color still photographs of the star cast is used in this old Bengali cinema poster. The left side of the poster features a large black and white still photo of actor Kaushik Banerjee, while actress Sonali Gupta is see on the right side in a color photo. Smaller passport sized black and white still photos featuring the supporting star cast against yellow backgrounds is depicted on the left.
Typography used in this original Priyatama movie poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a highly stylized font in red and yellow, creating a striking contrast.
The soundtrack album of Priyatama (1980) was composed by Shyamal Mitra.
