Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the 1983 historical Hindi film written and directed by Kamal Amrohi that starred Hema Malini in the titular role of warrior princess Razia Sultan.

Produced and presented by A.K. Misra under the Rajdhani Films banner, Razia Sultan (1983) also starred Dharmendra and Parveen Babi in key roles along with Pradeep Kumar, Vijayendra, Ajit, Veena, Sohrab Modi, Tajdar Amrohi and Shandaar Amrohi in supporting roles. Sarika and Radha Saluja made guest appearances in the film.

Shot over a period of seven years, Razia Sultan (1983) was the most expensive Indian film made at the time of it’s release, with most of it’s budget poured into the construction of lavish sets. Although it failed to recover it’s investment at the box office, the film is fondly remembered for Hema Malini’s stellar performance.

Razia Sultan (1983) was based on the story of Mughal princess Razia Sultana (Hema Malini) who defied patriarchy and became the first female ruler over the Delhi Sultanate. The film traced her personal life as she learned the art of warfare and swordsmanship from a slave called Yakut Jamaluddin (Dharmendra), eventually falling in love with him.

Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1983), this Razia Sultan movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This old Bollywood poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by one of the greatest Bollywood poster painters of all time, Pandit Ram Kumar Sharma. The printed signature of master Bollywood poster painter Pandit Ram Kumar Sharma is seen on the top right hand corner of this vintage Bollywood poster.

Stunning side profiles of lead actress Hema Malini and actor Dharmendra are seen prominently on the top. The actor’s portrait appears illustrated in grey blue. Pandit Ram Kumar Sharma’s spectacular compositions and brush work are apparent in the background of this hand painted Bollywood movie poster which shows an army of soldiers engaged in battle below.

Typography used in this Razia Sultan movie poster appears in calligraphy font in red, accentuated with a white border. A translation of the title is seen in Devanagari Hindi as well.

The soundtrack album of Razia Sultan (1983) was composed by noted music director Khayyam. One of the songs from the album, “Aye Dil-e Nadaan” sung by Lata Mangeshkar became a hit at the time of the film’s release.
