Vintage Tarzan movie poster for sale: Tarzan and Delilah (1964).
Featured here is an actual surviving original vintage Bollywood poster of the 1964 fantasy Hindi film co-produced and directed by A. Shamsheer that starred Azad and Chitra in the titular roles of Tarzan and Delilah .
Released under the H.S. Films banner, Tarzan and Delilah (1964) also starred Heera Sawant (who co-produced the film with Shamsheer) along with Bela Bose, Bhagwan and Agha in supporting roles.
Tarzan & Delilah (1964) told the story of a young woman called Sunanda (Bela Bose), who was born after her mother was raped. Unable to bear the social stigma of becoming an unwed mother, Sunanda’s mother loses her sanity. Her brother, who is a doctor, decides to torment Sunanda when she comes of age. He holds Sunanda solely responsible for his sister’s insanity. However, Sunanda escapes her uncle’s evil designs with the help of a drunkard named Fernandes (Bhagwan). The two steal a boat and set out to sea. The boat capsizes when it encounters a cyclone. Sunanda and Fernandes are washed ashore on a remote island, where they are discovered by Tarzan’s chimpanzee companion, Zippy. The chimpanzee brings the duo to Tarzan (played by Azaad Irani), who helps them with food and water. When they all fall asleep, they are captured and taken to Queen Laila (Heera Sawant) who is instantly attracted to Tarzan. The queen’s brother Rozem desires princess Delilah (Chitra), who has been captured and kept in prison for him by their mother, who is an evil sorceress. When Delilah sees Tarzan for the first time through the prison window, she instantly falls in love with him. She realizes Tarzan is the answer to break the evil sorceress’s spell and escapes with his help. Queen Laila and her brother Rozem pursue Tarzan and Delilah and make several attempts to capture them. However, in the end their love for each other triumphs. Tarzan ends up happily ever after with Delilah, while Fernandes and Sunanda fall in love.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent first release run of the film in north Indian theaters (somewhere in the 1960s), this vintage Tarzan movie poster was designed and printed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This old Tarzan and Delilah poster was originally designed in mixed media format; combining both hand painted oil on canvas as well as photographic collage techniques by a poster art studio in Delhi and features striking artwork.
Lead actor Azad is seen in his character of Tarzan embracing Delilah on the top right. Agha is seen in a stunning hand painted close up illustration on the left. Heera Sawant appears at the center holding a dagger in a photographic still.
Lettering used in this old fantasy movie poster is primarily in English, with a translation of the title seen in both Devanagari Hindi as well as in Urdu at the bottom. The main English title appears in white with a black border against a red background on the top.
The soundtrack album of Tarzan and Delilah (1964) was composed by Robin Banerjee.
