Vintage Bengali cinema poster for sale: Uttarayan (1963).
Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bengali movie poster of the 1963 Bangla drama directed by Agradoot that starred the most popular and successful film star of Bengal, Uttam Kumar in a double role.
A black and white film, Uttarayan (1963) was a remake of the Dev Anand classic, Hum Dono (1961). It also starred Supriya Devi, Sabitri Chatterjee, Pahari Sanyal and Ariful Haque in supporting roles.
Uttarayan (1963) told the story of identical soldiers Pranbir and Rateshwar (both played by Uttam Kumar), who’s lives become entangled after one of them dies in battle. When Pranbir decides to visit Rateshwar’s family to inform them about the latter’s demise, he gets mistaken for Rateshwar and decides to play along.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1960s), this vintage Bengali cinema poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Uttarayan poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.
Superstar Uttam Kumar and actress Sabitri Chatterjee are captured in an illustrated portrait in line drawing style at the center of this vintage Bengali cinema poster. Set against a red background, the artwork stands out in contrast. Uttam Kumar is seen again in military uniform at the bottom, giving away the double role plot of the film.
Typography used in this old Uttam Kumar poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a very stylized diagonal font.
The soundtrack album of Uttarayan (1963) was composed by Robin Chatterjee.
