Chamatkar (1992) is an Indian fantasy comedy inspired from the 1968 Hollywood film, Blackbeard’s Ghost. It told the story of a simpleton with a generous heart called Sunder (Shah Rukh Khan) who comes across a ghost called Marco (Naseeruddin Shah). Sunder wants to fulfill his father’s dream of starting a school in his village, while Marco needs help attaining salvation. The two decide to help each other out.
After his debut in Deewana (1992) in which he played second lead, Chamatkar (1992) was superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s second film and the very first film that featured him in a lead role, making this Bollywood poster, highly collectible!
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release of the film (somewhere in the 1990s), this Shah Rukh Khan movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Chamatkar poster was originally designed in mixed media collage format, by pasting still photos together. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is seen in a large still at the center, with his palms outstretched. Dangling heads of actor Naseeruddin Shah are seen on the top. SRK and Naseeruddin appear dancing on top of one of the heads.
Actress Urmila Matondkar is seen in a solo still photo on the bottom left and again in a romantic pose with Shah Rukh alongside. Passport styled close up pictures of supporting actors Shammi Kapoor and Tinnu Anand are seen at the bottom of this Chamatkar poster. Typography used in this poster is primarily in English, with the title translated to Devanagari Hindi as well at the bottom.
The soundtrack album of Chamatkar (1992) was composed by Anu Malik, while lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. Tracks such as “Is Pyar Se Meri Taraf Na Dekho” sung by Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik are still fondly remembered and played today.
