Bollywood western film poster for sale: Bhookh (1978).
Featured here is a vintage original Bollywood poster of the 1978 Hindi action drama co-directed by H. Dinesh and Ramesh Puri (Dinesh-Ramnesh) that starred Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy in key roles.
Produced by S.I. Shivdasani and released under the Chitrashala banner, Bhookh (1978) also starred Asha Sachdev, Ranjeet, Amjad Khan, Om Shivpuri, Aruna Irani, Krishan Dhawan, Nazir Hussain, Paintal, Dina Pathak, Indrani Mukherjee and Ratnamala in supporting roles.
Bhookh (1978) told the story of wealthy landlords Thakur Harnam Singh (Amjad Khan) and his son Chhote Thakur Ranjeet Singh (Ranjeet) who have spread a reign of terror in Dhan village. Their warehouses are filled with grain, while poor farmers in their village are starving to death. Any opposition from the farmers is swiftly silenced by Thakur Harnam Singh and his henchmen. He orders the brutal slaying of a family of poor farmers who are starving to death. The man of the house and his wife are killed in cold blood and their hut is lit on fire. Their two little girls are saved by a war veteran referred to as Colonel (Om Shivpuri), who raises them single-handedly. When Bina (Reena Roy) and Asha (Asha Sachdev) grow up, Colonel tells them the story of how their parents were brutally slaughtered. The two return to Dhan village to their parents’ home and vow to bring Thakur Harnam Singh to justice. When a drought hits the village, Thakur Harnam Singh seizes the opportunity to take advantage of the starving farmers’ hopeless situation by asking them to become bonded laborers in his field and mortgage their lands to him in exchange for grain. Left with no choice, the farmers agree and their merciless exploitation begins. Ajay (Shatrughan Sinha) returns to Dhan from the city after completing his education as a doctor and is shocked to learn that his father is now a bonded laborer working in the fields of Thakur Harnam Singh. After working under inhumane conditions, Dr. Ajay’s father dies of exhaustion and disease. Bina, Asha, Ajay and Colonel team up against the brutality and terror of Thakur Harnam Singh and his son Chhote Thakur.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release of the film (somewhere in the 1980s), this Bhookh movie poster was created for publicity of the film in north Indian theaters but never ended up being used.
This Bollywood western film poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a movie poster design studio in Delhi and features striking artwork.
Lead actor Shatrughan Sinha is illustrated in a quirky hand drawn portrait on the left carrying a rifle. Set against a simplistic white background, the artwork stands out and creates an impact. Villain Ranjeet appears in a hand drawn portrait on the top right, while actress Reena Roy is seen in a hand painted portrait on the bottom right of this vintage Bollywood poster.
Typography used in this Bhookh poster is entirely in English, except for a translation of the title in Devanagari Hindi at the bottom. The main English title is illustrated in a 3D font in red with a blue border.
The soundtrack album of Bhookh (1978) was composed by Sonik Omi. One of the songs from the film, “Ghunghroo Chhanke Bin Tore Kaise” sung by legendary singer Asha Bhosle featuring Aruna Irani became popular at the time of the film’s release.
