Artistic movie posters for sale: Guest House (1959).

Featured here is a rare vintage original Bollywood poster of the old black and white Hindi film, Guest House (1959). Directed by Ravindra Dave, the drama starred Ajit, Shakila and Pran in key roles. Lalita Pawar, Helen, Lillian and Tiwari played supporting roles in the film.

Produced by Mulk Raj Bhakri under the Golden Movies banner and released by Mudnaney Film Service, Guest House told the story of two cousin brothers, one on the path of good and the other, evil.

Printed and circulated during the release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1959), this artistic movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

The artwork of this Guest House poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a poster design studio in Bombay. The printed signature of artist J.V. Nachankar is seen on the bottom right of this vintage Bollywood poster.

Lead actor Ajit is seen in a superbly illustrated portrait at the center. He appears dressed as a waiter working at the Guest House, wearing a turban and carrying a serving tray with dishes. Lead actress Shakila appears in a hand painted portrait below, in the avatar of a rich Bombay city girl wearing modern clothes. She is seen holding a pocket mirror to her face which almost looks as if she is clicking a selfie with a mobile phone.

A fabulous dancing portrait of Shakila wearing traditional Indian clothing is seen on the top. Artistically drawn caricature like figures appear at the bottom right of this Bollywood poster in an action scene.

Typography used in this artistic movie poster is completely in English, with a translation of the title appearing in Devanagari Hindi on the center right.

The soundtrack of Guest House featured the popular song by Mukesh, “Jiska Juta Usika Sar, Dil Hai Chhota Bada Shahar” (English translation: Who’s Shoes, The Same’s Head; Heart is Small, the City is Big”). The song became synonymous for moving to Bombay city to chase one’s dreams.
