Lagaan photos set for sale.
This is an actual surviving rare original set of 20 still photos of the blockbuster 2001 period film, Lagaan.
Written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan starred Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh and British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne in lead roles.
A Bollywood epic sports-drama, Lagaan became the third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film after Mother India (1957) and Salaam Bombay! (1988), making this original Lagaan photos set, highly collectible!
Lagaan received critical acclaim and bagged eight National Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards, nine Screen Awards and ten IIFA Awards. It was included in Empire Magazine’s “100 Best Films of World Cinema,” Time Magazine’s “All-TIME 25 Best Sports Movies” and was also the only Indian film to be listed on Channel 4’s “50 Films to See Before you Die.”
Printed and circulated somewhere during the first release of the film in 2001, this set of 20 original Lagaan photo lobby cards was printed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
Key scenes from the film are seen captured in twenty different still photos in this set. Ten players of the cricket team led by captain Aamir Khan are seen in various photo stills along with iconic songs from the film such as “Mitwa,” “Radha Kaise Na Jale” and “O Rey Chhori.”
Each of these 20 lobby cards have a photographic still set against a background that resembles an old map. The title is seen at the bottom prominently in English in green. A subtitle below it reads, “Once upon a time in India,” giving away the period setting of the film. A translation of the title in Devanagari Hindi and Urdu is seen on the bottom left and right corners respectively of each Lagaan lobby card.
The highly acclaimed soundtrack of Lagaan was composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Held as one of A.R. Rahman’s finest compositions, the soundtrack became a rage throughout the nation upon its release. Songs like “Mitwa” and “Chale Chalo” are fondly remembered and played till today.
