Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood movie poster of the hit 1976 romantic Hindi film that featured Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab in lead roles.

Directed by Basu Chatterjee, the king of middle-of-the-road cinema, Chitchor (1976) was an adaptation of a popular Bengali story called Chittachakor written by Subodh Ghosh. It told the story of naive village girl Geeta (Zarina Wahab) who’s childlike behavior has her parents worried about her future. Geeta’s sister Meera who lives in Mumbai city recommends a suitor for her who is an established engineer called Sunil (Vijayendra Ghatge). He is scheduled to be posted by his company to Geeta’s village for a construction project. However, an overseer of the company called Vinod (Amol Palekar) who is the engineer’s junior arrives ahead of his boss and the family mistakenly believes him to be Sunil. They shower Vinod with love and tell Geeta to get to know him as he is the man they desire to make their son-in-law. The mistake is exposed when Meera writes to the family informing them that Sunil was held up and is now on his way to the village. Geeta’s family wants to undo the error and get their daughter married to the Germany educated engineer Sunil and not the singing simpleton Vinod. However, when Sunil arrives, it is too late as Geeta and Vinod have already fallen in love with each other.

Printed and circulated during the first release of the film (somewhere in the mid 1970s), this vintage Bollywood poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

Very few old Hindi film posters were designed in a horizontal/landscape format, making this poster incredibly rare and highly collectible!

This poster was originally designed on a hand drawn canvas by master Bollywood movie poster artist/painter B. Vishwanath. The poster bears his printed signature on the bottom left.

The lettering on the top of the poster announces the film as a “Fresh fascinating romantic musical in cinemascope.” Beautifully hand drawn portraits of the lead actors are seen in a romantic pose on the left of the poster, with a landscape sunset background towards the right.

The film’s success spawned a remake in 2003, ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon’ starring Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan.
