Kitsch movie poster for sale: Geetaa Mera Naam (1974).
This is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the old 1974 Hindi film that featured actress Sadhana Shivdasani in a double role opposite Feroz Khan and Sunil Dutt.
Produced by R. K. Nayyar, Geeta Mera Naam was directed by his wife, Sadhana Shivdasani. The film also starred Helen, Rajendra Nath, Ramesh Deo, Achala Sachdev, Agha, Keshto Mukerjee and Junior Mehmood in supporting roles.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film in Kolkata (somewhere in the 1970s), this kitsch movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
Geeta Mera Naam is responsible for reviving the career of Sunil Dutt, whose acting career was at a standstill before this film was released. His role as a villain in the film won him mass appeal, making this vintage Bollywood poster, highly collectible!
This old Geeta Mera Naam poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a Bollywood poster art studio in Kolkata. A large quirky hand drawn portrait of actress Sadhana appearing helpless is seen on the right of this kitsch movie poster.
She is seen again at the bottom in a dramatic scene trying to rescue hero Feroz Khan from burning flames (portraying the hero as weak and helpless whereas the woman is shown holding a knife and wielding power). Anti-hero Sunil Dutt is painted watching over in the background. The appearance of actress Sadhana twice in this poster gives away her double role in the film.
Very few vintage Bollywood posters feature women in the driver’s seat of action, while the male protagonist appears helpless waiting to be rescued, making this kitsch movie poster, highly collectible.
Typography used in the poster is primarily in English, with the film’s title translated in Devanagari Hindi as well at the bottom. A stunning shade of red is used in the background of this two color hand painted Bollywood poster.
Geetaa Mera Naam (1974) tells the story of four children who are separated at a fair and unknowingly reunite years later – a popular theme that was explored in several other films in Indian cinema. The soundtrack album of the film was composed by hit duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal while songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle.
