Indian comedy movies poster for sale: Ginny Aur Johnny (1976).
Featured here is an actual surviving original vintage Bollywood poster of the 1976 comedy drama directed by Bollywood’s legendary comedian Mehmood that starred him in the lead role as “Johnny” along with his real life daughter Ginny.
Mehmood fondly introduced his daughter Ginny in the opening credits of the film as, “The most lovable, adorable, sensational discovery of the decade.”
Produced by Amarlal P. Chhabria and released under the Balaji Arts banner, Ginny Aur Johnny (1976) also starred Helen and Bhushan Tiwari in supporting roles. Several well wishers of Mehmood, including Hema Malini, Nutan, Amjad Khan, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Vinod Mehra, Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Piloo Wadia, Anwar Hussain, Nazir Hussain, Mukri, Leela Mishra, Mohan Choti, Polson and Ruby Myers (Sulochana) made special appearances in the film.
Written by Abrar Alvi, Ginny Aur Johnny (1976) was an unofficial adaptation of the Academy Award winning Hollywood film, Paper Moon (1973). Just like its American counterpart, the film starred real life father and daughter playing con artists in an on the road comedy drama. To localize the story to an Indian setting, the two are depicted selling expensive Holy books of all three dominant religions in the country, i.e. The Bible, The Bhagwad Gita and The Quran.
Printed and circulated during the film’s first release in theaters (somewhere in 1976), this Ginny Aur Johnny poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
Originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by legendary Bollywood poster designer D.R. Bhosle, this Indian comedy movies poster features a striking design.
Known for his restrained approach and minimal backgrounds, master Bollywood poster painter D.R. Bhosle depicts comedian Mehmood sitting on the hood of his red vintage convertible at the center. He is seen wearing vintage sunglasses and holding on to a Holy book and a newspaper in his hand.
Baby Ginny is illustrated below in her mischievous and bratty element. She is seen making a face and hiding hundred rupee bills in her doll. The background, as is with a wide majority of Bollywood posters hand painted by D.R. Bhosle, is kept a minimal white. Only the three Holy books, i.e. The Bible, The Bhagwad Gita and The Quran are seen illustrated all around the poster on the top. The red convertible that the two lead actors are shown driving in their road trip is also seen on the top right of this Indian comedy movies poster.
Typography used in this vintage Ginny Aur Johnny movie poster is entirely in Devanagari Hindi, with the title translated in English as well. The main Devanagari Hindi title stands out in blue accentuated with a yellow border.
The soundtrack album of Ginny Aur Johnny (1976) was composed by Rajesh Roshan, while lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. It featured the catchy track, “Johnny Mera Naam Hai” sung by Kishore Kumar.
