Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the 1991 blockbuster Hindi drama that starred Sridevi in a double role opposite Anil Kapoor.
Produced and directed by the “King of Romance” Yash Chopra, Lamhe (1991) starred Sridevi in a critically acclaimed dual role of mother and daughter. Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher, Deepak Malhotra and Dippy Sagoo played supporting roles in the film, while Ila Arun made a special appearance.
Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1991), this Lamhe poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
Lamhe (1991) was the second and final film that actress Sridevi did with Yash Chopra, the first being Chandni (1989). The film was a massive critical success and is widely regarded as Yash Chopra’s finest work. For her stellar performance in Lamhe (1991), Sridevi bagged the Best Actress award at the 37th Filmfare Awards.
Over the years, Lamhe (1991) has attained cult status. It won a total of five Filmfare Awards including Best Film. Although the film did moderately well at the box office in India, it was a blockbuster overseas and on home video.
Lamhe (1991) finds mention in several rankings of top 100 films in Indian cinema, making this Sridevi poster, highly collectible!.
This old Bollywood poster was originally designed using mixed media techniques (i.e. photographic collage as well as hand painted oil on canvas format) by noted Bombay-based film poster painter, Yashwant. His signature is seen printed on the bottom right of this Lamhe movie poster.
A stunning close up still photograph of actress Sridevi with wind-blown hair is seen on the left. Actor Anil Kapoor is seen in a younger, clean shaven avatar on the top. Smaller full length still photos of the couple romancing and dancing together are seen at the bottom of this Lamhe poster. Actor Anil Kapoor is seen with a mustache and grey side burns, in an older avatar in this photo still.
The foreground is entirely photographic. Bollywood poster artist Yashwant uses an illustration to depict the background. Soothing strokes are used in the cloudy blue sky on the top, while the bottom shows a field of flowers with red roses seen prominently.
The title of the film appears in striking typography in a 3D font in gold. Lettering in this old Sridevi poster appears in English, with only a translation of the title in Devanagari Hindi script seen on the top left.
The soundtrack of Lamhe (1991) was composed by Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia, known together as Shiv-Hari, while lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. It was a blockbuster hit at the time of it’s release. Songs like “Yeh Lamhe Yeh Pal” sung by Hariharan, “Kabhi Main Kahoon” sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Hariharan, “Morni Baga Ma Bole” and “Chudiyan Khanak Gayeen” sung by Lata Mangeshkar became a rage throughout the nation and are fondly remembered and played till date.
Lamhe (1991) was the last film to be written by Rahi Masoom Raza, who previously wrote the dialogues of India’s most popular television serial, Mahabharat (1988). The film featured legendary actress Waheeda Rehman dancing to her most memorable track, “Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai” from her cult film Guide (1965).
