Featured here is an actual surviving rare vintage Bollywood poster of the 1979 Hindi romantic musical drama directed by Kanak Mishra that starred Arun Govil and Zarina Wahab in lead roles.
Produced by Tarachand Barjatya under his prestigious Rajshri Productions banner, Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979) also starred Rita Bhaduri, Amrish Puri, Rajendra Nath, Raj Kishore, Hari Shivdasani, Pinchoo Kapoor, Roopesh Kumar, Mukri, Ram Mohan, Yunus Parvez, Jagirdar, Leela Mishra, Sudha Shivpuri and Baby Vandana in supporting roles.
Dedicated to mother at Sri Aurobindo Ashram Puducherry, Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979) told the story of a talented singer called Birju (Arun Govil) who lives in a small village called Ramnagar. Birju is poor and unemployed, hailing from a middle class family of farmers. Chandramukhi (Zarina Wahab) is the daughter of wealthy landlord Babu Saheb (Amrish Puri). She returns to Ramnagar after a decade of studying in a big city (Lucknow), where she was living with her grandparents post her mother’s demise. Chandramukhi invites Birju to perform at her mansion after learning about his musical talent that has won him the praise of the entire village. The two gradually begin to be drawn to each other in love. However, the glaring class differences between the two makes it impossible for Birju to marry Chandramukhi. When Chandramukhi returns to Lucknow, she asks Birju to follow suit and pursue his singing dreams in a big city instead of limiting himself in his small village. Birju arrives in Lucknow, where he has to struggle to survive. Chandramukhi spots Birju pulling a handcart on the streets and asks her friend Geetanjali (Rita Bhaduri) to invite him to meet her father, who works at state-owned Aakashvani (All India Radio). He interviews Birju and is impressed with his talent. Birju is given a permanent job at All India Radio and slowly establishes himself as one of the most sought after playback singers in the country. In the meantime, things go downhill for Babu Saheb and Chandramukhi. The family loses a long running lawsuit, which takes away their entire royal estate and wealth. Chandramukhi takes up a job at the village school to make ends meet. Babu Saheb is still living in his the delusions of his aristocracy and rejects Birju’s proposal for his daughter. Will Chandramukhi and Birju be able to solemnize their love for each other?
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film (somewhere in the early 1980s), this romantic Bollywood movies poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Sawan Ko Aane Do poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by master Bollywood poster artist C. Mohan (Chandramohan Gupta) who is renowned for designing posters of the cult blockbuster Sholay (1975). His unique vertical signature is seen printed on the bottom right of this vintage Bollywood poster.
The lead couple, Arun Govil and Zarina Wahab are seen in a quirky hand drawn portrait singing and dancing together in the rain. Arun Govil is illustrated playing a musical instrument, serenading his lady love. A black and white still photograph taken from one of the songs in the movie is depicted at the bottom, while a tinted image of a woman dancing is seen on the bottom left.
Typography used in this Sawan Ko Aane Do poster is entirely in Devanagari Hindi, with only it’s title translated to English at the bottom.
The soundtrack album of Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979) was composed by Raj Kamal and featured memorable hits such as the title track, “Sawan Ko Aane Do” as well as “Chand Jaise Mukhde Pe.”
