Uttam Kumar poster for sale: Sonar Khancha (1973).
Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bengali cinema poster of the 1973 black and white romantic drama directed by Agradoot that starred the biggest superstar of Kolkata, Uttam Kumar in the lead role opposite Aparna Sen.
Produced by Sarkar Films, Sonar Khancha (1973) also starred Tarun Kumar, Nirmal Kumar, Robin Majumdar, Haradhan Bandyopadhyay, Subrata Chattopadhyay, Sulata Chowdhury, Aparna Debi, Kanika Majumdar and Monu Mukhopadhyay in supporting roles.
Sonar Khancha (1973) captured the troubled life of Kolkata’s biggest playback singing star, Jayanto Mukherjee (played by Uttam Kumar). When he returns to his hometown, fate brings Jayanto together with his childhood friend Shanti (played by Aparna Sen). Opposites attract and sparks fly. The two fall in love but fate has other plans for them.
Printed and circulated during the release run of the film in Kolkata theaters (somewhere in the 1970s), this old Bengali movie poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Sonar Khancha poster was originally designed in hand drawn format by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.
A black and white portrait drawing of superstar Uttam Kumar wearing a suit is seen prominently on the left. Actress Aparna Sen is seen in close up illustration encased inside a circle at the center of the poster. Concentric circles are seen around the portrait, giving an effect of expanding ripples on the surface of water. Smaller close up illustrations arranged in boxes are seen at the bottom of this Sonar Khancha poster.
Typography used in this old Uttam Kumar poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in red against a white background. A soothing shade of pastel blue is used in the background of this poster, giving it a very eye-pleasing appearance.
The soundtrack album of Sonar Khancha (1973) was composed by Bireswar Sarkar, with two songs sung by the nightingale of Indian cinema, Lata Mangeshkar.
