Sunghursh poster for sale.

This is an actual surviving old Bollywood movie poster of the 1968 Hindi film produced and directed by Harnam Singh Rawail that starred Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Balraj Sahni and Sanjeev Kumar in key roles.

A Rahul Theaters (India) production released under the United Producers’ banner, Sunghursh (1968) also starred Jayant, Deven Verma, Durga Khote, Iftekhar, Anju Mahendru, Padma Khanna, Sulochana Latkar, D.K. Sapru, Jagdish Raj, Mehmood Junior and Dilip Dhawan in supporting roles.

The film was based on a Bengali novel called “Layli Ashmaner Ayna” (Laayl-e-Aasmaan’s Mirror) written by award-winning writer Mahasweta Devi. A historical romance, the story narrated a dramatic tale of love between courtesans and thugs set in the holy city of Varanasi. The screenplay of Sunghursh (1968) was written by Anjana Rawail, while dialogues were penned by Gulzar and Abrar Alvi.

Considered as the greatest method actor in Indian cinema and often labeled as “tragedy king,” Dilip Kumar bagged Best Actor at the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards for his stellar performance in the film.

Sunghursh (1968) was the last film to star Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala together, making this old Bollywood poster, highly collectible!

Printed and circulated during a subsequent theatrical release run of the film in Delhi (somewhere in the 1970s), this Sunghursh movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

Originally hand drawn on canvas by a Bollywood poster design studio in Delhi, the printed signature of movie poster painter Amar is seen on the top left.

This hand drawn Bollywood poster features striking artwork. A large close up illustration of legendary actor Dilip Kumar is seen illustrated prominently on the left of this Sunghursh poster. A smaller hand drawn portrait of Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in a romantic pose is captured on the bottom right. Actor Sanjeev Kumar is seen holding a glass in his hand in a quirky illustration on the bottom left of this old Bollywood poster.

The top right features a dramatic scene taken from the climax of the film. Balraj Sahni is seen attacking Dilip Kumar with a dagger in this vintage Sunghursh poster.

Typography used in this old Bollywood poster is entirely in Devanagari Hindi. The lyrics of a super hit song from the film sung by Mohammed Rafi are seen written on the top: “Mere Pairon Mein Ghunghroo Bandha De Phir Meri Chaal Dekh Le” (Tie Anklets On My Feet And Then See My Moves).” The title uses bright contrasting shades of red and yellow in a 3D styled font to draw the viewer’s attention.

The soundtrack album of Sunghursh (1968) was composed by legendary music composer Naushad, while lyrics were written by Shakeel Badayuni. It featured the memorable song, “Mere Pairon Mein Ghunghroo Bandha De” sung by Mohammed Rafi.
