Cinema poster for sale: Suraj Aur Chanda (1973).
This is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the 1973 old Hindi film directed by T. Madhava Rao that starred Sanjeev Kumar, debutante Meeta and Sujit Kumar in key roles.
Shyama, Laxmi Chhaya, Jagdeep, Mukri and Jairaj played supporting roles in this period drama, while Bindu made a special appearance in the film.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent theatrical release run of the film in Delhi (somewhere in the late 1970s), this Suraj Aur Chanda poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This old cinema poster features stunning hand painted artwork. Originally hand drawn on canvas by a Bollywood poster design studio in Delhi, the printed signature of poster artist Devendra Khanna is seen on the bottom left.
Striking over painted close up portraits of lead couple Sanjeev Kumar and Meeta are seen prominently in this vintage cinema poster in a soothing shade of blue. Sanjeev Kumar is seen illustrated alongside again in a full figure portrait holding a fencing sword.
Typography used in this old Bollywood poster is a combination of both English as well as Devanagari Hindi. The title uses bright contrasting shades of red and yellow in an embossed font to draw the viewer’s attention. Random streaks of color in a mix of blue and green are seen in the background.
The soundtrack of Suraj Aur Chanda was composed by hit duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, while lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. Songs from the film such as “Jeena Marna Ab Din Raat” sung by Mohammed Rafi are fondly remembered and played till today.
