Bengali cinema poster art for sale: Baghini (1968).
Featured here is an actual surviving original Bengali cinema poster of the 1966 black and white Bangla social drama directed by Bijoy Bose that starred Sandhya Roy in the titular role opposite Soumitra Chatterjee.
Produced by S.M. Films, Baghini (1968) also starred Rabi Ghosh, Jahar Roy, Bikash Roy, Ruma Guhathakurta, Ajoy Gangopadhyay, Shamita Biswas, Chhaya Devi, Basabi Nandi, Bhanu Bandyopadhyay, Tarun Kumar, Aparna Devi, Renuka Ray and Sukhen Das in supporting roles.
Based on a novel of the same name written by Samaresh Basu, Baghini (1968) told the story of a strong, independent woman called Dugga (played by Sandhya Roy), who lives in a poor village plagued by social injustice. Her courage to fight against oppression earns her the moniker Baghini (tigress). Dugga falls in love with an educated and principled man called Chiranjib (played by Soumitra Chatterjee). However, village strongman Bhola (Rabi Ghosh) refuses to let the two come together and begins to torment Dugga. Refusing to be dominated and oppressed, Dugga fights valiantly against Bhola and in a confrontation kills him in self defense. Before surrendering to the law, Dugga and Chiranjib get married.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release of the film in Kolkata theaters (somewhere in the 1970s), this Baghini poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This old Bengali cinema art poster was originally designed in mixed media format using a combination of both hand painted oil on canvas as well as photographic collage techniques by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork.
Actress Sandhya Roy is seen in a stunning close up photo in black and white on the top. The red bindi on her forehead stands out in stark contrast. Soumitra Chatterjee appears in a close up black and white photo in his character on the bottom left. Bikash Roy who plays a police officer in the film is seen alongside.
Typography used in this old movie poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title appearing in a very creatively styled font in red against a yellow background.
The soundtrack album of Baghini (1968) was composed by Hemanta Mukhopadhyay.
