Featured here is an actual surviving original movie poster of the 1989 blockbuster that starred Sridevi in the lead role as “Chandni.”

Directed by “King of Romance” Yash Chopra, Chandni (1989) was a love triangle featuring Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna playing Sridevi’s love interests. Waheeda Rehman, Sushma Seth, Mita Vasisht, Anant Mahadevan, Achala Sachdev, Anupam Kher and Juhi Chawla played supporting roles in the film.

Printed and circulated during the initial release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the late 1980s), this Chandni movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

Chandni was the first film that actress Sridevi signed with Yash Chopra. The two worked again together in Lamhe (1991). The film was a massive critical and commercial success, becoming the highest grossing film of 1989. Chandni established Sridevi as the top Bollywood actress of her time and is widely regarded as Yash Chopra’s finest work. The film bagged the National Film Award for Best Popular Film.

Chandni (1989) was a landmark film. It’s massive success together with its chart topping soundtrack album brought back the era of romantic musicals, ending the era of violent action films in Indian cinema, making this Chandni movie poster, highly collectible!

This old Bollywood poster was originally designed using mixed media techniques (i.e. photographic collage as well as hand painted oil on canvas format) by noted Bombay-based film poster painter, Yashwant. His signature is seen printed on the bottom right of this Chandni movie poster.

Yashwant has used an interesting combination of hand painted artwork as well as photographic collage to create this old Sridevi movie poster. A soothing hand drawn illustration of the delicate petals of a rose flower moist with morning dew is seen in the background.

A stunning full length still photograph of actress Sridevi in a beautiful pose with her hands in the air is seen at the center. The photo has been over painted by artist Yashwant, giving it an illustrated effect.

The soundtrack of Chandni was the best selling album of 1989 as well as the decade with more than 10 million copies sold. Composed by Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia, known together as Shiv-Hari, lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. Songs like “Mere Haathon Mein” sung by Lata Mangeshkar, “Chandni O Meri Chandni” sung by Jolly Mukherjee and “Mitwa (Tere Mere Honton Pe)” sung by Lata Mangeshkar became a rage throughout the nation and are fondly remembered and played till date.
