Featured here is an actual surviving vintage Bangla cinema poster of the 1956 black and white romantic drama directed by Sushil Majumdar that starred Bengali cinema’s leading actress Suchitra Sen opposite Basanta Chowdhury in lead roles.
Produced by Movie Screen Ltd., Subharatri (1956) also starred Sabita Chattopadhyay, Bhanu Bannerjee, Chhabi Biswas, Nripati Chatterjee, Suprabha Mukhopadhyay, Biren Chattopadhyay, Rajlakshmi Devi, Kanu Bandyopadhyay and Haridhan Mukhopadhyay in supporting roles.
Printed and circulated during the release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the late 1950s), this old Bengali cinema poster was designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Shubhoratri poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features stunning artwork.
Superstar Suchitra Sen is captured in a striking close up illustration in this old Bengali movie poster. The portrait captures her charismatic smile beautifully. Actor Basanta Chowdhury is seen in a smaller hand drawn portrait on the bottom left, holding a paintbrush and a palette in his hands. The artwork in the foreground as well as background is illustrated in gradients of a single color, giving this Shubhoratri poster a very vintage look.
Typography used in this old Suchitra Sen movie poster is entirely in Bengali. The title appears in a creative font in maroon, which stands out in contrast against a white background.
