Old Gujarati movie poster for sale: Sonbaini Chundadi (1976).
Featured here is a rare surviving original vintage Indian cinema poster of the old 1976 Gujarati film directed by Girish Manukant that starred Dilip Patel, Ranjit Raj, Sohil Virani, Anjana Mumtaz and Narayan Rajgor in key roles. Child actress Priti Parekh played the titular role of Son in the film.
A family drama, Sonbaini Chundadi (1976) told the story of a joint Gujarati family living together in one home. When four of seven brothers leave their home and village to travel to the city in search of jobs, everything changes. Their evil sister-in-law unleashes her tyranny upon the remaining members of the family, making their lives a living nightmare. She secretly leaves her home every night to go to the local temple where she engages in an illicit affair with a monk. When she ends up murdering her husband, the monk disposes off his body on a funeral pyre. However, the dead husband returns in spirit to avenge his death and teach his evil wife a lesson and also protect his younger sister Son who is being mistreated by her.
Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1976), this old Gujarati movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Sonbaini Chundadi poster was designed using photographic collage techniques by a Bollywood poster art studio in Bombay. Actress Priti Parekh is seen merrily swinging away on a tree, with her expressions evoking childlike glee and innocence. Her play doll is seen on one side, seated along with her on the swing.
The image is taken from an unforgettable song from the film that captures the beautiful emotional bond shared between brother and sister. A line from the song is seen written on the top of this Sonbaini Chundadi movie poster: “Kon Halave Limdi ne Kon Zulave Pipli” (Who Will Shake the Neem Tree, Who Will Swing the Peepal Tree).
Typography used in this poster is entirely in Gujarati, with the title seen in red, creating maximum impact against the light cream background.
The soundtrack album of the film was composed by Avinash Vyas, assisted by Gaurang Vyas. It is remembered for it’s unforgettable track, “Kon Halave Limdi ne Kon Zulave Pipli” sung by Ashit Desai and Foram Desai.
