Featured here is a rare surviving original Bollywood poster of the old 2001 Hindi film co-written and directed by Santosh Sivan that starred the “Baadshah of Bollywood,” Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role of “Samrat Ashoka” (Emperor Asoka).
A historical epic, Aśoka (2001) chronicled the early life of the great Mauryan emperor who ruled over the Indian subcontinent in third century BC. Kareena Kapoor played the character of the emperor’s consort “Kaurwaki,” while Ajith Kumar, Hrishita Bhatt, Danny Denzongpa, Johnny Lever, Raghuvir Yadav and Suresh Menon essayed supporting roles in the film.
Aśoka (2001) was widely screened across the United Kingdom and North America, and was also selected for screening at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was originally titled, “Ashoka The Great” and later shortened to simply “Aśoka.”
Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 2001), this Asoka movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
