Featured here is a rare vintage original Bollywood poster of the old 1973 Hindi film directed by Sudhendu Roy that starred the greatest superstar of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role along with Nutan and Padma Khanna.

Saudagar (1973) was based on a Bengali short story written by Narendranath Mitra called “Ras” (Juice). It featured Prithviraj Kapoor’s younger brother Trilok Kapoor in a supporting role, along with Murad, Dev Kishan, Leela Mishra, Minoo Mehtab, Rita Das, Nadir, V. Gopal and C.S. Dubey.

Although not a commercial success, Saudagar (1973) was critically acclaimed and selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Academy Awards, making this Saudagar poster, highly collectible!.

Printed and circulated during the original first release of the film (somewhere in 1973), this Amitabh Bachchan old movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This vintage Bollywood poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas by one of the finest Bollywood poster painters of his time, C. Mohan (Chandramohan Gupta), owner of Studio C Mohan. His printed signature is seen in blue on the bottom right hand corner of the poster.

This beautiful old Amitabh movie poster is a striking example of C. Mohan’s mastery with the paintbrush. Flawlessly executed, this hand painted Bollywood poster features a stunning portrait of superstar Amitabh Bachchan prominently at the center in red. A beautiful portrait of actress Nutan is seen alongside. A smaller photographic still of superstar Amitabh Bachchan is seen underneath the two hand painted portraits. A black and white still of actress Padma Khanna in a sensuous pose is seen at the bottom.

Typography used in this original Saudagar poster is primarily in Devanagari Hindi, with a translation of the title appearing in English as well as Urdu.

The soundtrack album of Saudagar (1973) was composed and written by Ravindra Jain. It featured two blockbuster hit songs: “Tera Mera Saath Rahe” sung by Lata Mangeshkar and “Sajana Hain Mujhe Sajna Ke Liye” sung by Asha Bhosle. “Door Hain Kinara” sung by Manna Dey was another very popular song from the film.
