Featured here is a rare original vintage Bollywood poster of the old 1973 Hindi film directed by Sudhendu Roy that starred the greatest superstar of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role along with Nutan and Padma Khanna.

Saudagar (1973) was based on a Bengali short story written by Narendranath Mitra called “Ras” (Juice). Produced by Tarachand Barjatya under the prestigious Rajshri Productions banner, Saudagar (1973) featured Prithviraj Kapoor’s younger brother Trilok Kapoor in a supporting role, along with Murad, Dev Kishan, Leela Mishra, Minoo Mehtab, Rita Das, Nadir, V. Gopal and C.S. Dubey.

Although not a commercial success, Saudagar (1973) was critically acclaimed and selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Academy Awards, making this Amitabh Bachchan film poster, highly collectible!.

Printed and circulated during the original first release of the film (somewhere in 1973), this Amitabh Bachchan old movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This vintage Bollywood poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas by one of the finest Bollywood poster painters of his time, B. Vishwanath (Bhide Vishwanath). His printed signature is seen on the bottom left of this poster.

This old Amitabh Bachchan film poster is a striking example of Bollywood poster painter B. Vishwanath’s mastery over the paintbrush. A stunning side profile portrait of actress Nutan is seen dominating the right side of this Saudagar poster. Her face is seen painted in tranquil shades, blending with the river in the background.

Superstar Amitabh Bachchan is seen in a portrait alongside in his character of a date palm jaggery seller. He is seen high up on a date tree extracting palm sap. Another hand drawn portrait of the superstar appears on the left of this Amitabh Bachchan film poster, where he is seen romancing Padma Khanna in a canoe. The picturesque river scenery in the background is captured in beautiful brush strokes by artist B. Vishwanath.

The plot of the film is summarized in a tagline seen at the bottom: “Story of The Bitter Sweets of Life!” The English title of the film appears in a striking running font in yellow accentuated with a red border outline.

Typography used in this original Saudagar movie poster is primarily in English, with a translation of the title appearing in Devanagari Hindi as well as Urdu.

The soundtrack album of Saudagar (1973) was composed and written by Ravindra Jain. It featured two blockbuster hit songs: “Tera Mera Saath Rahe” sung by Lata Mangeshkar and “Sajana Hain Mujhe Sajna Ke Liye” sung by Asha Bhosle. “Door Hain Kinara” sung by Manna Dey was another very popular song from the film.
