Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the 1979 Hindi drama directed by Madan Bavaria that starred Naseeruddin Shah, Neeta Mehta and Vijayendra Ghatge in key roles.

Produced by Sam Sugnu Jethwani and released under the Sonnar Films’ banner, Shaayad (1979) also starred Poornima Jayaram, Nitin Sethi, Om Puri, Farida Jalal and Simi Garewal in supporting roles. Iftekhar, Nadira and Achyut Potdar made guest appearances in the film.

A suspenseful saga of a love triangle involving a dying patient, Shaayad (1979) dealt with the complex subject of euthanasia and mercy-killing. The film was critically acclaimed and praised at the time of it’s release.

The oath of Hippocrates appears in the background of the credits of Shaayad (1979), giving away the medical/healthcare premise of the film.

Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1979), this Shaayad poster was designed and printed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This vintage Bollywood poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a leading art studio in Bombay.

The artwork is set in a rectangular frame. Another illustration of Neeta Mehta hugging Naseeruddin Shah while lying down on a bed is seen below. The two contrasting portraits give away the underlying love triangle theme of the film.

Typography used in this Naseeruddin Shah movie poster is entirely in English, with only the title seen translated to Devanagari Hindi. The English title is illustrated in a running font in blue with a red border, while the Devanagari Hindi font appears in a striking shade of red.

The soundtrack album of Shaayad (1979) was composed by Manas Mukherjee. It featured the touching song, “Khushboo Hoon Main Phool Nahin” sung by Mohammed Rafi. “Mausam Aayega Jayega” sung by Manna Dey & Asha Bhosle and “Main Sooraj Ki Roshni” sung by Mohammed Rafi & Asha Bhosle were two other memorable duets from the film.
