Jugnu poster for sale.
Featured here for sale is an extremely rare original vintage Bollywood poster of the old 1947 Hindi film produced and directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi that starred his wife, the “Queen of Melody” singer and actress Noor Jehan in the titular role as “Jugnu” opposite the “Emperor of Acting” Dilip Kumar.
Released under the Shaukat Art productions banner, Jugnu (1947) also starred Shashikala, Agha Mirza, Latika, Parveen, Zia, Sanger, Ghulam Mohammed and Jillo Bai in supporting roles. The film also featured the most successful playback singer in Indian cinema, Mohammed Rafi in a cameo.
Jugnu (1947) marked the first box office success of Dilip Kumar, paving the way for his illustrious career that followed. Released a few months prior to India’s independence, Jugnu (1947) was the highest grossing film of it’s time, making this vintage Bollywood poster, highly collectible! It’s box office record was only broken a couple of years later by Dilip Kumar’s Andaz (1949).
Shortly after the film was released, India received independence from British rule and was partitioned. Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and his wife Noor Jehan left India and settled in Pakistan. In the years that followed, the actress was honored by the title “Malika-e-Tarannum” and established a record of singing the largest number of songs in Pakistani cinema (over 10,000 in total).
Jugnu (1947) was ahead of it’s time in portraying a very forward college romance, which challenged prevailing social norms of the time. It was met with a lot of opposition, with some critics labeling the film as vulgar and distasteful, calling for a ban. It was finally released after 28 minutes of objectionable content was duly removed by the government.
This vintage Jugnu poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a leading Bollywood poster design studio in Bombay. Stunning portraits of lead actors Dilip Kumar and Noor Jehan are seen set against a light orange background. The title of the film appears in English with translations into the two major regional languages, Devanagari Hindi and Urdu appearing alongside.
Dilip Kumar is seen in his character of a wealthy landlord’s son, while Noor Jehan appears as a poor orphan girl in this romantic Bollywood movie poster.
Jugnu (1947) is widely considered as a landmark film as it marked the first major hit for Dilip Kumar who went on to become Bollywood’s greatest legend in the years to come. The soundtrack album of the film was composed by Feroz Nizami. It featured the timeless classic song, “Yahan Badla Wafa Ka Bewafai Ke Siwa Kya Hai” sung by Mohammed Rafi and Noor Jehan.
