This is an actual surviving vintage Bollywood poster of the 1978 Hindi action film that starred Shatrughan Sinha opposite actress Reena Roy.
Directed by Subhash Ghai, Vishwanath (1978) also starred Bharat Bhushan, Rita Bhaduri, Sulochana Latkar, Parikshit Sahni, Prem Nath, Sudhir, Pran, Madan Puri, Satyendra Kapoor, Iftikhar, D. K. Sapru, Mukri, Ranjeet, Lalita Pawar and Viju Khote in supporting roles.
Printed and circulated during a subsequent release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1980s), this old Indian classic poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
Vishwanath is known for actor Shatrughan Sinha’s most iconic Bollywood dialogue, “Jali Ko Aag Kehte Hain, Bhuji ko Raakh Kehte Hain, Aur Jis Raakh Se Barood Bane, Usse Vishwanath Kehte Hain!” (That Which Is Burnt Is Called Fire, That Which Is Extinguished Is Called Ash, And The Ash With Which Gunpowder Is Made, Is Called Vishwanath), making this old Indian classic poster, highly collectible!
This Vishwanath poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a small time Bollywood poster art studio in Kolkata. A large hand drawn portrait of lead actor Shatrughan Sinha holding on to temple bells is seen on the top. “Shotgun” Shatrughan Sinha is seen again in his bearded avatar wearing dark glasses in a superbly hand painted close up at the bottom of this old Indian classic poster.
A stunning portrait of actress Reena Roy dancing is seen prominently at the center of this Vishwanath poster. Quirky hand drawn portraits of actors Pran and Prem Nath appear alongside.
This Vishwanath movie poster is set against a catchy red background, with the title appearing in blue. Typography used in this old Bollywood poster is entirely in English, with a translation of the title in Devanagari Hindi appearing at the center.
The soundtrack album of Vishwanath was composed by Rajesh Roshan, while lyrics were penned by Anjaan and songs sung by Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey.
