Fantasy film posters for sale: Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp (1952).
Featured here is an actual surviving original vintage Bollywood poster of the old 1952 Hindi film produced and directed by Homi Wadia that starred Mahipal, Meena Kumari and Vasantrao Pahelwan in key roles.
Pioneer of special effects in Indian cinema Babubhai Mistry brought key scenes involving the genie to life, making this fantasy film ahead of it’s time.
A Wadia Brothers production released under the Basant Pictures banner, Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp (Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag 1952) also starred S.N. Tripathi, B.M. Vyas, Babu Raje, Urmilla, Dalpat, Azim, W.M. Khan, Jillobai, M.K. Hasan & Pandit Amarnath, Mithoo Miyan, Shree Bhagwan, Julian and Raja Sandow in supporting roles.
Based on the popular Middle-Eastern folk tale from The Arabian Nights, Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp (1952) tells the fantastical story of a poor man who finds a magical genie lamp in a cave and uses it to unite with a princess whom he loves.
Printed and circulated during the theatrical run of the film in north India (somewhere in the late 1950s), this fantasy film poster was printed for publicity of the movie but never ended up being used.
This Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format by a movie poster design studio in Delhi.
The “Tragedy Queen” of Indian cinema Meena Kumari is seen in a quirky hand drawn illustration at the bottom of this old Bollywood poster. She is seen in her character of princess Badar, wearing a sheer veil. Actor Mahipal is seen in his character of Aladdin above. Genie in the lamp, strongman Vasantrao Pahelwan is seen carrying an entire palace is in his mighty hands.
The artwork is painted in soft pastel shades, and captures the fantasy theme of the film beautifully. Lettering used in this poster is entirely in Devanagari Hindi script, with a translation of the title seen in Urdu at the bottom.
The soundtrack album of Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag (1952) was composed by S.N. Tripathi. It featured the popular track “Yun Hi Ulfat Ke Maron Par Yeh Duniya Zulm Karti Hai” sung by Mohammed Rafi and Shamshad Begum.
