Featured here is a rare surviving original Bollywood poster of the old 2001 Hindi film co-written and directed by Santosh Sivan that starred the “Baadshah of Bollywood,” Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role of “Samrat Ashoka” (Emperor Asoka).

A historical epic, Aśoka (2001) chronicled the early life of the great Mauryan emperor who ruled over the Indian subcontinent in third century BC. Kareena Kapoor played the character of the emperor’s consort “Kaurwaki,” while Ajith Kumar, Hrishita Bhatt, Danny Denzongpa, Johnny Lever, Raghuvir Yadav and Suresh Menon essayed supporting roles in the film.

Aśoka (2001) was widely screened across the United Kingdom and North America, and was also selected for screening at the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was originally titled, “Ashoka The Great” and later shortened to simply “Aśoka.”

Printed and circulated during the first release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 2001), this Asoka movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This SRK movie poster features superstar Shah Rukh Khan in a striking still photo on the top. Dressed in battle armor, the actor is seen holding a sword against his forehead. The intensity in his eyes has been captured brilliantly in this Asoka movie poster.

Kareena Kapoor is seen in a still photo at the bottom left of this Shan Rukh Khan poster. An army led by superstar Shah Rukh Khan is seen in the background, giving away the premise of the film.

Typography used in this original Asoka movie poster is entirely in English and the title is seen in a stunning vintage hand written typeface in white a the bottom.

The soundtrack album of Aśoka (2001) was composed by Anu Malik and was very successful at the time of it’s release. One of the songs from the film, “San Sanana” sung by Alka Yagnik is fondly remembered and played till today.
