Featured here is a rare surviving original Bollywood poster of the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) abbreviated simply as DDLJ.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a cult Hindi romance that was produced by the King of Bollywood romance, Yash Chopra and directed by his son, debutante director Aditya Chopra. It starred superstar Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) and Kajol in lead roles.
Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Satish Shah, Achala Sachdev, Himani Shivpuri, Parmeet Sethi, Mandira Bedi, Pooja Ruparel, Anaita Shroff and Karan Johar played supporting roles in the film.
Printed and circulated during the debut release of the film in theaters (somewhere in 1995), this rare DDLJ poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This original Bollywood poster features a striking still photograph of the lead couple. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is seen holding Kajol in his arms, as she leans back on him. Their faces appear lit with a light source emanating from the right. The expressive faces of the couple stand out in stark contrast against a red black gradient background.
Typography used in this DDLJ poster is entirely in English, with the title appearing in a stylized running font. The trademark feather hat worn by superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the dupatta worn by Kajol are both creatively interwoven into the logo as icons.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) is an all-time blockbuster and remains the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. In the year 2020, the film was still running at the Maratha Mandir theater in Mumbai – a full 25 years after its first release! The film’s screening was only temporarily halted during the lockdown period imposed due to COVID.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) is considered as one of the biggest Bollywood hits ever made in Indian cinema. It boasts of 10 Filmfare Awards, the most ever won for a single film at the time as well as a National Film Award.
DDLJ’s epic success has ensured it continues to find a place on the “Movies You Must See Before You Die” list, making this Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge poster, highly collectible!
The soundtrack album of the film sold over 100 million units. It featured seven super hit songs composed by Jatin Lalit and penned by Anand Bakshi.
Tracks like “Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane” sung by Udit Narayan, “Tujhe Dekha Toh” sung by Kumar Sanu & Lata Mangeshkar, “Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main” sung by Asha Bhosle & Abhijeet and “Mere Khwabon Mein” sung by Lata Mangeshkar have become permanently etched in Bollywood’s musical hall of fame.
The wedding song, “Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna” has become an essential part of Indian culture, fondly played at weddings across the globe till today.
