Featured here is an actual surviving original Bollywood poster of the old 1950 black and white noir Hindi film written and directed by Gyan Mukherjee that featured one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema, Ashok Kumar in the lead role. Actress Nalini Jaywant played his love interest.

Produced by Sargam Pictures’ Unit at the prestigious Bombay Talkies studio, Sangram (1950) was a crime drama that also starred Hemavati, Nawab, Shashi Kapoor (credited as Shashi Raj), Baby Tabassum, Sajjan and Samson in supporting roles.

Sangram (1950) was legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt’s last film as an assistant director, post which he went on to direct films solo and also became a very successful actor. Shashi Kapoor and Tabassum appeared in the film as child artists, essaying the childhood characters of Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaywant respectively.

Printed and circulated during the release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the 1950s), this Sangram movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.

This minimalist Bollywood poster was originally designed in hand painted oil on canvas format. A simplistic hand drawn illustration of the lead couple Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaywant is seen at the center. The illustration is done using a single tone of blue, giving this original Bollywood poster a vintage feel. The background is a minimal white, making the illustration in the foreground stand out in contrast.

Typography used in this Sangram movie poster is primarily in English, with the title translated into both Devanagari Hindi as well as Urdu. The main English title of the film is seen written in a diagonal font in dark blue.

The soundtrack album of Sangram (1950) was composed by C. Ramchandra. It featured the memorable song, “Kaske Kamar Ho Ja Taiyyar, Karna Hoga Beda Paar” sung by legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum together.
