Very rare, original two sheet vintage Bollywood movie poster of the epic Hindi film Sholay (1975) for sale.
This two sheet poster measures a stunning 60″x40″ inches in size when its two individual sheets are joined or pasted together. The poster comprises two separate single sheets, each measuring 40″x30″ inches.
Sholay is the greatest film ever made in Indian cinema and the second longest running film in the history of Bollywood.
This very rare two sheet old Bollywood poster was printed during the first release of the film in the mid 1970s. It was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
In this spectacular large vintage Bollywood poster, superstar Amitabh Bachchan who plays the character of “Jai” in the film is seen holding a gun on the top. The other supporting cast comprising Dharmendra (Veeru), Hema Malini (Basanti) and Sanjeev Kumar (Thakur) are seen below. An iconic photo still of the climax scene where Dharmendra is strangulating Amjad Khan (Gabbar Singh) is also seen in this beautiful two sheet poster. The right hand side of the poster features an iconic still from one of the most popular songs of Sholay, “Yeh Dosti” in which Amitabh and Dharmendra are seen on a motorbike.
Interestingly, still photographs of all the actors have been used in designing this Sholay Hindi movie poster, except Sanjeev Kumar, whose portrait appears hand drawn / hand painted in this amazing two sheet Bollywood poster.
This original two sheet Sholay poster was printed by the most sought after printing press for Bollywood publicity, Dnyansagar Litho Press Bombay, in the mid 1970s and even bears the original indication mark on the two individual sheets as S1 (Sheet 1) and S2 (Sheet 2).
Hand painted typography has been used in the design of this original Sholay poster, and the lettering appears in three different languages – English and Urdu on the top and Devanagari Hindi on the bottom.
Two sheet posters comprise two separate individual single sheet posters measuring 40″x30″ inches each. When pasted together they line up perfectly and together form one single two sheet poster. In the attached image, there may be a slight gap visible between the two – as the images of the top and bottom half have been photographed individually and then joined together digitally. When framed or pasted, there will be no gap visible between the two sheets and the appearance of the poster would be seamless – i.e. just like a single sheet poster.
Sholay is the highest grossing film of all time in Indian cinema and unanimously regarded as the greatest film ever made in Bollywood. Declared as the “Film of the Millennium” by BBC India in 1999, Sholay is an unforgettable classic that has become almost synonymous with ‘masala’ in Indian cinema. Its characters such as Jai, Veeru, Basanti, Thakur & Gabbar Singh have been etched into history. The film has an unbeaten record for running for over five consecutive years after being released. A 3-D version of this film is on its way for release. Sholay enjoys a cult following in India and its dialogues are often quoted in various media.
