Uttam Kumar poster for sale: Harano Sur (1957).
Featured here is an actual surviving old Bengali movie poster of the blockbuster 1957 romantic drama written and directed by Ajoy Kar that starred the unbeatable romantic pair of Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar in key roles.
Produced by Uttam Kumar himself, who is unanimously regarded as the most successful star of Bengali cinema, Harano Sur (1957) was released under the banner of Alochaya Production and distributed by Chayabani Private Limited. The film also featured Pahari Sanyal, Chandrabati Devi, Kajari Guha, Utpal Dutt, Dipak Mukherjee, Khagen Pathak and Shailen Mukherjee in supporting roles.
Harano Sur (1957) was a woman-centric film that told the story of a psychiatrist played by Suchitra Sen who falls in love with an amnesia patient under her care, played by Uttam Kumar. Inspired from the Academy award nominated Hollywood film Random Harvest (1942), the film was a massive success at the box office and is considered one of the classics of Bengali cinema.
Printed and circulated during the release run of the film in theaters (somewhere in the late 1950s), this old Bengali movie poster was originally designed for publicity of the film but never ended up being used.
This Harano Sur poster was originally hand painted on canvas by a poster design studio in Kolkata and features striking artwork. A large illustrated close up of the most beautiful actress in Bengali cinema, Suchitra Sen is seen hand drawn on the left. The pencil drawing is highlighted using a shade of light green, with the actress’ red bindi and lipstick highlighting her hand drawn face.
A bunch of red roses are seen illustrated below in this vintage Uttam Kumar poster. The superstar is seen hand drawn in black and white alongside, with only his lips having a touch of red. Creative inverted triangles are seen in the background of both portraits, with light green being the choice for Suchitra Sen and red for Uttam Kumar.
A minimal white background us used in this old Bengali movie poster, which makes the simplistic artwork stand out in stark contrast. Typography used in this old Uttam Kumar poster is entirely in Bengali, with the title illustrated creatively at the bottom using polka dots that appear in light green as well as red, indicating the intertwined emotions of the couple.
The soundtrack album of Harano Sur (1957) was composed by Hemanta Mukherjee. It featured the memorable song, “Tumi Je Amar” sung by Geeta Dutt.
